What method is the best defense against dog attack and which brands are of best use?
I am getting into the habit of jogging in order to lose weight. The problem is a lot of people leave their dogs unleashed in my neighborhood. I know if I cease movement, they will cease chasing me, but this is not always the case. Today I almost got mauled, but I was carrying pepper spray and I used it to avert the canine’s attack successfully. This got me wondering about what other methods for self defense against dog attacks when I go for a jog?
I know there is the ultrasonic repellent. I know there is pepper and OC spray. I also know there is taser. What other methods are out there? Which one is the best or should it be a combination? What should I look for when I shop for dog repellent in order to get the best quality and what a good place to shop?
Also, what ones carry the least amount of legal restrictions in the US?
Rather not use a firearm. Shooting my neighbor’s dog is a sure way to get on their bad side. Plus I rather not hurt the dog chasing me, just have a means to defend myself if I have to with as little harm as possible.
I am not going around "abusing animals".
I go around minding my own business. It is sometimes necessary to defend my self. Hell, I had to do so today, so advice (not harassment) would be appreciated. Thank you.

I would recommend OC Pepper Spray. I don’t know of any other deterrent that is as effective with no lasting effects to the animal. I would recommend a good brand such as Sabre or Fox. After about 30 minutes the animal will be fine. The OC is a sure stop it now defense. The others, besides electronic stun devices, are marginal at best or lethal options. You can check places like Cabela’s or other outdoor sporting goods sites and see what they have available that may fit your needs. As far as the legal restrictions, OC is probably your safest bet there also. As far as I know it’s legal in every state to carry. Good call on being a step up on your own self defense. Most people play the helpless victim part, not the part of a defender. Also good call on not wanting to shoot the dog. I am a huge advocate for carrying firearms for defense, but shooting a guys dog these days carries stiff penalties, plus it pisses off the neighbors and tree huggers. I hope this helped. The good thing about OC is that it’s easy to get and cheap. Good luck!

I would like to suggest an electronic dog repellent for you. This way, the dog wont experience the negative effects of being stunned or sprayed. It has a discomforting but not harmful high frequency sound (20,000Hz-25,000Hz), audible to dogs but not to humans. And, the second is a super bright LED flashing strobe that temporarily blinds and confuses the dog. Helps stop the approach of unwanted dogs up to 40 feet. Also has a training setting. Requires on 9 volt battery. And can also be used as a flashlight.
