I had let my dog outside, around the side of the house, towards the back to go pee. The mailman came around the side of house, and the dog barked once, and he started yelling and put his hand on what I found out later was pepper spray. The dog started to run towards the mailman, barking, tail wagging.

I ran after her, and she stopped about six feet from the mailman, still sort of barking and her tail still wagging. Right as I was going to grab her collar, the mailman pepper sprayed her, backed up, tripped over a tree root, and fell.

I corralled the dog, put her inside, and in the meantime the mailman said he’s have to write a report on this, and said, "You crazy bitch, that dog needs to be put down!"

This is the first time he’s dealt directly with my dog. The dog is normally inside, and I’ve seen him on one occasion egging the dog on to bark, and then complain that the dog was "vicious".

I understand that as a responsible pet owner, I need to keep her inside when the mailman comes. However, he comes at all hours, so I cannot accurately predict when he will be there. Also, the dog was in the middle of peeing. He came up around the side of the house, towards the back yelling and advancing aggressively.

What, if any recourse, do I have? My dog was yelping in pain for twenty minutes, and got some up her nose. This is the first time ANYTHING like this has ever happened. Had I known the mailman was coming, I could’ve avoided this but I didn’t.
ALSO–the time he egged her on and called her vicious, she was inside the house. Behind a double paned window and a shut two-inch thick oak door. FYI
Apparently, he walked around the side of my house to cut through my lawn to deliver my neighbors mail, THAT is why he was so far around my house. We do not have a fence in the yard, as we moved in literally a week ago. When she’s outside, it’s around back, for 2 minutes TOPS

I have a wild skunk that frequents my back porch. My neighbors are slobs and the skunk can easily get into their garbage for a free meal, he does it regularly! I have a Boston Terrier and I really don’t want to step outside and get sprayed! So I’m looking for a natural skunk repellent that won’t poison my dog. If I just shoot him, then I’ll have a smelly, dead skunk in my back yard! Any ideas?
I’ll try anything, except getting sprayed!

I don’t believe in harming dogs. My neighbor has a bulldog ( possibly pit bull) that is digging out of her yard and coming into mine especially when i take my dog out to eat. When I take my dog out I am always outside and I keep him leashed when he is out. My dog is also of the bulldog family. the other dog baks a lot and may want a play buddy, but i think he is trying to show his dominance over my dog and the yard cause he is behind us. I am seriously thinking of spraying my neighbors dog with mace or pepper spray if he escapes again. I fear her dog may be itching for a fight one of these days. And yes she was told that her dog escapes . This is the second escape even though they fixed the hole. What should I do?
i am hoping mace, peper spray or some spray would stop the dog from returning, but i dont want to do permanent physical damage. Will the spray wear off quickly?
I was thinking of using water, maybe i’ll just do that and call animal control and take pictures .
I like the air horn idea and water. I really didn’t want to have to mace a dog , even though he seems a bit aggressive. i just want to give him a bad experience so he doesn’t associate my yard as a place to be.

This morning my daughter, Zoe, was walking our 9 yr old dog Lucy, and our 12wk old puppy. Both on leashes. A man from the other side of the neighborhood was walking by them. He pointed a can of pepper spray at my dog, Lucy. She is very protective of my daughter (8 yrs old). Lucy barked at him and he sprayed her! He then told my daughter she "better lock those dogs up"Thankfully, he hit her shoulder, but he could of just as easily hit my daughter! My dog was on a leash! Is this legal? My husband confronted him, and the guy kept insisting our dog was pitbull. He had no remorse for what he had done. She is not. My mom owned her parents. Her dad is german shepherd and her mom is cocker spaniel and dachsund, but she looks like a short hair border collie. What breed she is is besides the point…the man pepper sprayed my dog while she was on a leash 100 ft from my house. We are contemplating calling the police.
Actually, there really isnt any more to this story. My daughter is never one to exaggerate and the man didnt deny anything when my husband confronted him. The only thing I did leave out was, at first I thought that Lucy was off of her leash when it happened. at that pt I was just upset that he had spoken ugly to my daughter. When I found out my dog was on a leash I was livid. As for her being unsupervised, she was in front of my neighbors house, and our houses are very close together, but she is not supposed to go out of the yard unless one of us is with her, and we reprimanded her for that. But she was within view of any part of our house and yard. Less than 100 ft. from our front door. So sorry, the story was verified with the man to be accurate. I just keep thinking how scared my daughter must have been when he sprayed her dog, and then he spoke so aggressively to her. And we are making a police report this morning.
FYI: I dont like any kind of drama, so I was hoping that it could be resolved by talking to the man. We have lived in this house for over 3 yrs & never had any issues with our anyone in the neighborhood. But since he was unapologetic, Im pretty sure he is going to try to poison or shoot my dog if he gets a chance. So we are not doing the police report to press charges, we are going to file an incident report just so its on file. I was walking her last night and he was staring out the window at me the whole way past his house. It was creepy. and was walking this morning with his wife & stared at my house as he walked by. Im thinking he is bored and wants to start trouble or something. In the yrs we have lived here I have never seen him until now, and he lives 4 houses away.

I have a 5 yr old alpha doberman female, that I found out after having her about 2 months that she was trained as an area protection dog/ deterrent. When she is outside in the yard, she is always "looking" into the neighbors yards, and everything she sees that moves gets barked at and she runs the perimeter of the yard like she is possessed. I was told she was trained to do that. I do not know if she would bite anyone who happened to come into her area,because it is gated and no one has ever tried.I have asked several dog trainers about how to get her to stop doing it, with no luck/ideas that work. She is very very loud and the neighbors kids are scared of her. She is very friendly, and so quiet and chill when in the house and out in public that you don’t even notice her. But shes a monster in the backyard. I have tried the whistle technique, bringing her in when she starts the bad behavior, and rewarding her for "quiet". None of it works. I want to be able to be out in the yard with her and my other 3 dogs peacefully. I have had her for a year and no luck. My other 3 dogs do not act like her. They are very good in the yard and occasionally chase a squirrel. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Late last week, our neighbors did something to cause our dog to be afraid to go into the back yard. Normally, he prefers to be outside and would run all over the yard just because. Recently however, something has caused him to stop doing so. Some of his running would consist of running along the fence line with our neighbor’s daughter, but the other day she did something to our dog that caused him to yelp and run away from the fence. Since, he as been afraid to go withing 50 feet of the fence unless one of use it out with him. We took him to the vet who was unable to find anything physically wrong with him, there were no signs of pepper spray, and the girl and her mother deny doing anything to our dog. Is there a way to find if they are using an ultrasonic dog repellent?

Up until this afternoon my dog loved our backyard. It is usually a treat for her to play outside.
At noon our neighbors sprayed their yard with something and then pounded some stakes into the ground.
My dog is now terrified of going onto the grass of the backyard. She can’t walk into the kitchen (on the lenoleum anyway) without shaking either (the kitchen butts up against the backyard).
When we bring her outside to go to the bathroom…she forces her self to goes onto the grass…walks a couple steps, starts to shake, sticks her tail between her legs, flattens her ears against her head, and runs back to the house crying.
I have to walk her out the front door, and take her to the opposite corner from the backyard before she relaxes.
I don’t know what to do.
Could this be a reaction to a sonic rodent repellent? Or a nervous reaction to chemicals? What’s the best way to approach my neighbors w/o accusing them?
2 yr old Rat Terrier, House broken, spayed, & no known allergies.

after going over the answers i received about our neighbors dog pooping in our yard, we want to try spray products, that was mentioned, to spray around the yard to repel the dogs and cats. i’ve never heard of this. what is the name or brand and the name of the place i can get it from. thanks

I adopted a 1 1/2 year old chiweenie a month ago and he chews EVERYTHING. Just within the last week, he has discovered chewing electrical chords too. I started to crate him whenever I leave the house, but he will bark and wimper until I get back (which I dont get because he is crate trained! It is not like hes never been in one before!).

I want to be able to leave him by himself for an hour when I go to get groceries without crating him….so I heard that pet stores sell this spray that you use to stop your dog from chewing. Does this stuff actually work? Are there other things that can be used besides the deterrent spray? I heard also that clove oil may work too? Thanks!
I crate him for bed every night and he does have a lot of toys to play with…he plays with all of them and enjoys them, but he is constantly looking for other things to chew. I’m not sure it is separation anxiety because he chews when I am home too!
OH and the reason I dont want to crate him when I am shopping/at work is because when I crate him any other time besides bedtime, he will yip and bark from the moment I leave till the moment I get home. I live in an apartment and I am afraid the neighbors will complain!

our neighbors dog charges the fence everytime I’m outside and barks non-stop when I’m in the back yard. I’m fearful that he’ll one day charge through the fence and I want something to carry with me that will stop him dead in his tracks (not a gun or taser). I tried cyenne pepper in a spray bottle, but it won’t spray
