I’m sure everyone has heard of "Citronella" when it comes to mosquito’s. Did you know that there is an actual "Citronella" plant ? Well there is, and they work great on those small patios or for those window gardens. This plant is a natural mosquito repellent, and I love it’s tart Citronella aroma. You can find them at "Home Depot" ( That’s where I found mine ). I have a small-mid-size outdoor patio, and on the Texas Gulf Coast, any native or transplanted Texan knows, dealing with mosquito’s is practically a year round job. I hated using those foggers and found that the smoking Citronella Lanterns worked, but hated the smoke from having to use so many about the yard. Now that I reside in the "apartment style", I found a "Natural" solution for those Texas Skeeters, and if you’re up north and can find these Citronella Plants, they should work great there as well. ( Just remember to make room for them inside where the sun shines during those frigid months. ) As for being a pet hazard, check this out Citronella
Your site lists citronella as being toxic. Does that mean that citronella anti-barking collars are dangerous to dogs?
The answer is no, Ted—in most cases. While citronella oil does have the potential to be toxic in large amounts, the amount many collars use in their spray is relatively small. Most contain about 10 percent citronella. This level might potentially be an issue for animals who have a history of respiratory problems, but otherwise we would not expect to see any problems.

We just moved into a new house and dont have a backyard fence yet so I have to take all 3 of my dogs out on leashes to go potty. Pretty much everytime I go out there I get bit. I cant spray mosquito repellent on me several times a day everyday, that’d be super unhealthy. So is there any more natural ways of getting rid of them?
I recently bought one. When I take my dog for a walk, I clip it on the neck of my shirt or on the pocket of my pants. I walk him to his favorite place in a field full of bugs, mosquitoes, and tall grasses. But he loves it and won’t do his doo doo business anywhere else! Also when I weed outside, I use it and the most I got bitten just once! Compared to 10 bites. Hell, that’s good.
(Did a test and used the DEET spray repellent one day cause I was scared my feet would get bit. I sprayed loads of it and I got bit at least 6 times anyways.)
So I found it to work GREAT! At least it seemed to work. Didn’t get bit once the 7 times I’ve walked him so far using this clip. To test, once I saw a mosquito in sight and I took the Clip On and directed it towards it. It flew away instantly.
But… I’m a bit confused. I smoke cigarettes. (Please, no smoking opinions or comments :-/ Thanks.) When I put my cigarette next to it, the fan seemed to suck the smoke in. It was weird. Maybe there’s more to it and it’s not actually sucking the smoke in. Cause I thought it was supposed to be a fan. Blowing the repellent out?
And it also has no odor! HUGE PLUS! They did a story on the local news this week about mosquitoes and repellents. I never knew this but they said DEET (the main ingredient in mosquito repellents) does not actually repel mosquitoes, it just confuses them somehow. They will still come around you but they are not supposed to bite. With the Off Clip On they seemed to avoid me. No buzzing in my ears all the time bull s***!
For those that have tried the "Off! Clip On"
What do you think of it? Did it work for you?
This video details the costs and the effectiveness period I experienced with Feline, Equine, Canine and Human tags. None lasted longer then 5 weeks despite their claim to last 4 months. The 5 week period extended from June 11, 2009 to around July 18th. I shall post details on my blog at in2books.blogspot.com UPDATE I AMENDED the other 4 videos to state: This video is #1 of 5 total. #5 is the “Effectiveness & Cost Analysis” conclusion. The glory of the equine tag was short lived & lasted NO MORE then 5 weeks total. Not just with my horse, but 9 others of friends. I had equine, feline, canine and human tags, which all proved to be ineffective. Sorry, but honest reporting is only fair.
So, does anyone know any homemade mosquito repellent for dogs? I just want to know before I go all the way to Pet-Co which is very far and the only store I know that carries it and I am not going to Pet Smart because it is farther down and I got lost trying to go there the first time (it was also the last).I know about all the store and commercial repellents so don’t come to me with that. Please help.P.S. if this makes a difference she is a Pomeranian and has loads of fur and up to date on shots.
Our deck outback (there’s woods behind our backyard) has a terrible mosquito problem. I am looking for a natural and or homemade solution to getting rid of them. I would like to get something that will repell them from the deck, possibly the backyard. I don’t have a lot of money to spend on all of the products advertized, not to mention I wouldn’t know which one to get. I also have grandchildren and a dog, so I am looking for something safe. Please Help!!
I’m tired of getting bit by mosquitoes, even in the middle of the day, while walking my dog. I don’t want to put on a DEET spray or lotion just for 20 minutes of being outside.
Are there better alternatives? How well do the insect shield clothing work? I hear the mosquito wrist bands a re a rip off as well as the dragon fly sound stuff. Also the OFF clip on isn’t for moving around. It doesn’t work if you move and takes a few minutes to be effective if moved, definitely not for me.
I could wear long sleeves and pants, but it’s over 100 degrees here. So, anyone know of a mosquito repellent that you don’t have to apply on your skin that works?
We have a major mosquito problem around here, Ive been spraying the yard, but its not taking care of it completely. What is the best way to keep mosquitoes off of him?
Is the flea stuff for dogs (cant remember which one it is) that does mosquitoes any good? Also Ive seen people using Skin-So-Soft, is that any good, and is it ok for the dog? I use it on the kids, so it would cut down on bottles for hiking which is always good.
Thank you for the help.
Oddly enough we’ve never had a problem with fleas (well, once when he was a tiny puppy, but never since). And the only time he’s gotten a tick was when we went camping. It seems the woods in our yard are either bug free, or they have something better to bother than him.
I’ll looking into the spray for the yard today and considering Advantix.
Is Advantix worth doing just for mosquitoes though, or should I look at a less expensive product for when he wont be leaving our property?
