Mailman pepper sprayed my dog?

dog pepper spray

I had let my dog outside, around the side of the house, towards the back to go pee. The mailman came around the side of house, and the dog barked once, and he started yelling and put his hand on what I found out later was pepper spray. The dog started to run towards the mailman, barking, tail wagging.

I ran after her, and she stopped about six feet from the mailman, still sort of barking and her tail still wagging. Right as I was going to grab her collar, the mailman pepper sprayed her, backed up, tripped over a tree root, and fell.

I corralled the dog, put her inside, and in the meantime the mailman said he’s have to write a report on this, and said, "You crazy bitch, that dog needs to be put down!"

This is the first time he’s dealt directly with my dog. The dog is normally inside, and I’ve seen him on one occasion egging the dog on to bark, and then complain that the dog was "vicious".

I understand that as a responsible pet owner, I need to keep her inside when the mailman comes. However, he comes at all hours, so I cannot accurately predict when he will be there. Also, the dog was in the middle of peeing. He came up around the side of the house, towards the back yelling and advancing aggressively.

What, if any recourse, do I have? My dog was yelping in pain for twenty minutes, and got some up her nose. This is the first time ANYTHING like this has ever happened. Had I known the mailman was coming, I could’ve avoided this but I didn’t.
ALSO–the time he egged her on and called her vicious, she was inside the house. Behind a double paned window and a shut two-inch thick oak door. FYI
Apparently, he walked around the side of my house to cut through my lawn to deliver my neighbors mail, THAT is why he was so far around my house. We do not have a fence in the yard, as we moved in literally a week ago. When she’s outside, it’s around back, for 2 minutes TOPS

Pepper spray on dogs? (I hate these character limits!)?

dog pepper spray

Okay so, the person behind us has a dog who is constantly ramming into the fence that separates our yards, and my dad threatened to spray the dog with pepper spray if he continues. Thing is, we’ve never even confronted the people to tell them that they need to stop their dog. If he DOES decide to attempt to stop the dog, would pepper spray be a horrible idea? I’m worried we could get in trouble. Should we, instead, spray him with cold water or something to repel him?
Okay, I understand that I should talk to them. MY QUESTION WAS that would pepper spray hurt the dog, and could we get in trouble? Would cold water be a good alternative or would that further anger the dog?

Is it illegal for a mailman to pepper spray dogs?

dog pepper spray

I was just wondering because I was walking with my friend to her house and she was talking to me about how there’s this mailman who pepper sprays dogs in the neighborhood and she says they don’t bite or scratch the mailman, just bark at him like crazy,eh. So is this illegal?
Sorry I didn’t put this but yeah they are behind the fence.

How do you get rid of skunks?

natural dog repellent

ok, now I know people will be tempted to say things that I have already thought of, like fix holes in the fence, make sure no garbage or animal food is around, etc. But the fact is, right now I do have holes in my fence, and I do feed the birds, but we have city-issued garbage cans that animals can’t get into, so I need a solution other than taking care of those things.

My neighbor has a family of these damn things living under their porch, and we have a field across the street with plenty of rodents, and two restaurants nearby with plenty of garbage, so unfortunately I know these critters are here to stay. What I need is some kind of natural repellent that isn’t harmful to my dogs or cats. I put out mothballs before I realized how toxic they are (I cleaned them up), and I really want something else. I’ve heard that cedar chips might work. Does anyone know if this is true, or if there is anything else out there?

Training Your Dog- PetSafe Containment System

dog deterrent

acornpetco.com Electronic Pet Fence systems utilize underground or above ground boundary wires and collars to safely contain pets. Your pet responds to the stimulation through 2 contact points on the Receiver Collar that touch your pet’s neck. When your dog or other pet approaches the boundary, the collar warns him or her with a beeping alert. If the warning is ignored, a mild stimulus follows the warning. Electronic Pet Fence systems are a safe, effective and hidden way to contain your pet within his or her boundary so your pet can be contained to your property without having to pay the expensive cost of a traditional fence which can be unsightly. Also a dog may be able to just climb over, dig under or chew through a traditional fence. PetSafe is the #1 Pet Fence System in the World! Our Electronic Pet Fence systems outsell all the other brands combined! In fact, 8 out of 10 people buy a PetSafe brand pet fence over any other. Your pet wants to be free. You want him/her to be safe. Now you can both be happy. With a PetSafe Electronic Pet Fence system, your pet can roam — and you can relax, knowing he’s as safe as he is happy. More than just a barrier, PetSafe Electronic Pet Fence systems actually help train your pet. Using a magnetic field and safe, mild static corrections combined with a warning beep, our pet containment systems help your pet learn which areas are for playing and which are off limits. PetSafe pet containment systems are NOT solid barriers. The systems

my neighbor is spraying our dogs through our fence with something that smells like vanilla, can she do that?

dog repellent spray

We don’t know what she is spraying them with, but we do know that is smells like vanilla, and makes there coat matted, but not sticky. I have read that vanilla can be used as an insect repellent, but we think that she is using some sort of dog repellent that maybe she made herself. We have actually witnessed her spraying our dogs, and when asked she doesn’t know what we are talking about. I don’t think that it is legal for her to really spray anything through our fence at our dogs, but when I called around to verify this I was told to call another number which told me to call another number, so on and so on. We are mostly concerned about the health of our pets, and my sister who is pregnant. We do keep them fenced in, and make sure that they are not barking at an unreasonable hour.

is there anything out there that she could have made? also is it legal for her to do that?

Does anyone know of an all natural snail repellent?

natural dog repellent

I have two dogs and an all organic vegetable garden. I see that snails have been getting to my zucchini and yellow squash plants. I think this is happening at night since I do not see them during the day. I am looking for something that is not harmful to pets in case they get through the patch fence. I also do not want anything with chemicals (hence the organic soil and vegetables). I have read that salt works for some people, but am worried it may not be good for these vegetable since they are so new anyway. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

does anyone have a homemade dog repellent recipe?

dog repellent spray

our neighbors dog charges the fence everytime I’m outside and barks non-stop when I’m in the back yard. I’m fearful that he’ll one day charge through the fence and I want something to carry with me that will stop him dead in his tracks (not a gun or taser). I tried cyenne pepper in a spray bottle, but it won’t spray :(

Aggressive dog repellent?

dog repellent spray

My hubby and I were out walking our dogs yesterday, when suddenly a pit bull broke through a fence and charged us. Luckily it was friendly, however one of my dogs didn’t take too kindly to a strange dog charging at her and sniffing her, and they ended up fighting. I somehow managed to pull the pit away, and we got our dogs into someone’s garage. However we could not get the dog away from us. It followed us all the way home, and wouldn’t leave our neighborhood for hours and was terrifying the neighborhood kids.

I want to be prepared if this happens again. Has anyone had any luck with pepper or citronella dog repellent sprays? I worry about pepper spray potentially angering a charging dog even more, and making it mega aggressive. However, I’m worried the citronella sprays won’t be as effective.

Also, I know most of you will say to call Animal Control. We had no cell phone with us, and unfortunately, the dog belongs to one of our coworkers, so it’s a delicate situation.
The dog that charged us was female, as are both of my dogs. Both are fixed so they don’t go into heat.

And um, WOW on the blowing the dog away with a gun answer. Last I checked, my gym shorts didn’t come with a gun holster. I also don’t think people in the burbs would appreciate me pulling a Phil Spector on a dog right in the street in front of kids. What if something went wrong and a person got shot instead? This dog was tangled up with my husband and MY dog, and things were happening really fast…so, to protect my husband and dog, I should have possibly shot them instead of the intended target? That is brilliant and makes sense.

Trust me we are changing our route and talking to the coworker about the situation. :) No doubt about that. I just want a safety measure if it happens again somewhere else.

How to stop a dog running up and down the fence, causing mud. Dog deterrent?

dog deterrent

My dog runs up and down the fence because there are three dogs next door. She’s started making mud all the way up the fence.

Is there anything I can do to stop it? Even if i’ve taken her for a walk, straight after she will run up and down the fence. Even if her little eyes are all red and she’s exhausted, she’ll run up and down.

I’ve tried everything I can think of. I live in a two story house so it’s a bit hard for her to realise, because generally by the time i’ve gotten down stairs to stop her, she’ll run up to me.

If there isn’t anything I can really do to stop her behaviour, what can I put there to stop her.
