Do I have the right to pepper spray a dog that comes and attacks me?

I’m 16 years old and I’m a runner, when I run by some houses sometimes a dog comes after me and attacks me.

If he attacks you, definitely you can pepper spray him, but if he’s coming after you often you need to talk to the owners about keeping him in the yard. If he’s considered a hazard Animal Control will eventually have to get involved.

Yes- the dog has no right to charge and/or attack you and you are protecting yourself from a perceived threat.

Yeah if you feel you were put in immediate danger and felt that the dog could do some serious bodily harm to you then pepper spray can be applied.

Yes you have the right, but do you really want to? Maybe you should run a different route… Try and avoid those dogs.

Yes, you do. You should also call Animal Control to report a dog that is running loose – most places have leash laws requiring that dogs be leashed or confined to the owner’s property.

If this dog is a constant problem for you, why not try ringing the RSPCA?

Pepper spraying the dog might hurt him and it is not his fault that his owner hasn’t trained him properly.

You do have the right to protect yourself from attacks, however when it comes to pepper spraying a dog I would be careful. A dog will not forget the incident. One of two things may happen here: 1) the dog will perceive you as being the stronger party and leave you alone from then on, or 2) the attack will be worse next time because the dog feels threatened.

A better option would be get to know the dog and become friendly with it so the attacks will no longer happen or if its a major issue contact animal control. Dogs should not be outside of their home areas and the owners do need to take responsibility for their animals.
