A jogger sprayed my dog with pepper spray? What do i do, and how would you feel?
Literally, what an ***. As we loaded the car visiting family, the 5 of u were outside on the driveway, our SUBURBAN community is not known for crime or anything of that sort. A JOGGER is running on the road 10 feet from my white CHUWAWA dog (6 lb), who takes takes 2 steps toward him, the jogger takes out the spray and douses head to tail (in her eyes) with nearly seemed to be the whole can.
What should I watch for to make sure she is okay? And just give me some feedback, hopefully what an *** this guy is who would spray a WHITE 6lb chiwawa.
Terrible. C’mon even if you are a tad frightened from this dog approaching you, its OBVIOUSLY a small dog, and least it could do is nibble at your ankels; did we NEED to spray the hell out of the dog (need i remind you, infront of 5 family members), THEN keep running as if it were okay? Who the hell carries pepper spray in the suburbs? I think he was LOOKING to use that on someone/something, A little heated right now.

Take it from a former Vet Tech.
It’s the Chihuahuas that take fingers.
Why is it no one ever says, "OOPS, sorry, he gets a little excited, I guess I should have gotten him on a leash".
Was the dog on a leash? It should have been.
Who carries pepper spray in the suburbs?
Me!
I’ve been attacked 3 times by "friendly" dogs who, "wouldn’t hurt a fly". Yeah, until they nearly ripped my hamstring!
My dog has been hospitalized TWICE by people who’s dogs are "just in the yard/driveway".
My point is:
You never can tell when a stranger’s dog will bite.
Better be safe than sorry! I’ve been in the emergency room and the emergency vet because of this same situation.

I would give the dog a bath and put some natural eye drops in her eyes. The pepper spray was an act of assault. I would figure out the name of the person and press charges. If he would pepper spray your tiny dog, what’s he going to do with your children if they should come running out to the car before you? (that was just a joke)
As a jogger myself…I would have chased him down with phone in my hand calling 911 or just the reg. number for the police station. I would stay with him until the police arrived and I was able to file a report. Dogs are sometimes aggressive but I think I could withstand a 6 pound dog.
He evidently has issues.

take your dog to the vet call the police thats abuse personally i would have beat the shit out of him
By Brandy M, August 23, 2010 @ 5:00 am
you need to call 911 quickly and give them the mans description!!!!!
By Alyna K, August 23, 2010 @ 5:00 am
He’s a jerk, and if you see him again, tell him that, and tell the cops since your dog didn’t even do anything. I think your dog will be fine, but you might want to get him checked by a vet.

I would be outraged! Next time you see him, put bloody salt in his eyes!!
Take the poor dog to the Vets and explain what happened. Also warn others about that a$$.

How did the guy look?
I’m sorry but its just funny that a guy was carrying pepper spray. Maybe something happened to him when he was younger where he’s afraid of animals. The dog should be fine just give it a bath and clean its eyes out, no harm should come to the dog, but just be careful because if you dog would have just nibbled on him, then he could have over exaggerated the situation and said your dog attacked him and that he injured him and then you would be at fault for not having your dog on a leash. Sucks I know.

Well, keep in mind, as you said, YOU are heated right now because we owners feel defensive of our dogs… I think it’s easy to see from YOUR vantage point that sure, to you, your dog didn’t do anything, ONLY took "two" steps in the guys direction and like a mad man he busted out pepper spray and unloaded the whole can on your dog. And where you live is IRRELEVENT!!! Crime and dog bites are seperate issues and maybe that is why he carries pepper spray…
To him, he may have seen a stereotypical ankle biter that was NOT on leash (or was he/she?) approaching him as he jogged by. Personally, I would probably, if I had pepper spray be prone to do what I thought I needed to if to me a dog was coming at me. And it’s funny to me that you said "all it could do is nibble at your ankles"-has this happened in the past or are you just saying due to his size that your dog couldn’t literally do much damage? Honestly, I wouldn’t want even my ankle nibbled by some little ankle biter who isn’t properly restrained… there are even arteries in your legs and if one of those little dogs latched on to one of those I could bleed just as easily as if a larger dog bit me, just not nearly as big of punctures…
Ultimately, people in general who choose to be dog owners must take precaution. Unless you are in a confined area, keep your dog ON LEASH-not only for the public’s safety, but your dog’s safety! What if your dog ran out towards him and subsequently got plowed over by a car that didn’t see your pint sized pup? You have to take better care than that…

People that are concerned about their safety carry pepper spray (just because it’s the suburbs doesn’t mean bad things don’t happen.)
I’m sorry for your dog…but you can’t just let the dog run loose up to people. I don’t care what size (or color…whatever that has to do with anything) the dog is, they need to be kept under control. That man should have given you all an earful rather than hurting the dog, but it’s done now.
Your dog most likely will be fine. If things don’t seem all right, contact your vet to have a look.

If your dog was on a leash, the runner should not have sprayed him. If the dog was off leash and approaching the runner in any way, he was justified in protecting himself. Even little bites are painful..

well if the man told u that he has pepper spray and would spray ur dog if he came near he ha sthe right.SORRY
By appygirl, August 23, 2010 @ 5:00 am
first concern get the dog into a bath and carefully wash every inch of body including rinsing out the eyes.
second i nver let my dog out without leash as i never know what car she might decide to run to.
spook sends licks to yours.

Because the dog is so small it may be best to get him checked out by a vet.
As for what to do about the guy, you should try to find out who he is. Watch for him running by again. If the dog was on your property and not a sidewalk out side your yard and was not posing ANY THREAT then there could be legal actions taken against this man if any serious harm was cause to your dog.
I am sorry that things worked out this way I hope the lil one is ok.

I think they guy was a little excesssive… you dont’ mention that any of you were calling the dog back..
.
I think the guy should have waited until the dog was almost to him and I think I would have been jogging after the guy asking WTHeck.
There is the question of whether it happened on your property or on the street…. if dog was ON your property the the jogger was way out of line… If the dog went onto sidewalk or street jogger was within rights. By law your dog should be on leash or kept in control in public area….
Suburbs crime too nowhere is really safe and it is smart to carry pepper spray.
In the end it is up to you to make sure your dog is not going after people and any dog taking a few steps towards a runner would rightfully be viewed as a threat by person running.
Also biggest mistake small dog owners make is assuming their dog is a just a little dog. Little dogs can and do bite, attack and hurt people . IN fact Chihausaus are one of the tops in studies for aggressiveness! ! ! ! !
Granted a bite from chi is not near as serious as one from say my golden…. who is bigger and can inflict more damage. BUT a bite or being attacked can be traumatic .
A lot of dog bite prevention is by owner but there are a lot of bad owneres out there as well as some bad dogs. (don’t thumbs down me – some dogs have had distemper whatever and are just not right int he mind… )
AT any rate I might do this as a blot sometime soon… as it is very interesting and deserves more research.

Many dog owners are very egocentric and don’t really care what their dog does to others, and if Foo Foo or Brute bites people passing by, or barks all day and night, that’s fine. ‘Cause the owner doesn’t care about you.
A bit of spray is instructional to the dog, it’s been shown, and is a good thing to keep him out of trouble. Maybe the owner needs a small bit of spray too. Educational.
